The Shared School Bus System, which is part of the Sustainable Transport and Efficient Mobility Society (STEMS) program, seeks to minimize traffic congestion and promote a shift from private four-wheelers to school buses in Shillong city. The buses will be used by multiple schools for school trips and may also be utilized by employees for their daily commute, as well as tourists during holidays and weekends. The buses are equipped with GPS tracking, a passenger information system, and LED screens displaying the routes. The transport department will handle the operations and maintenance of the buses, while the Meghalaya Skills Development Society will provide training to the drivers and caretakers. The Prime Tourism Vehicles scheme provides financial assistance to tourism entrepreneurs to purchase premium tourist vehicles. This initiative aims to improve the overall tourism sector in the state while also creating job opportunities for entrepreneurs. The Meghalaya government plans to promote “High-Value Tourism” entrepreneurship in the state and intends to provide more assistance in the future to enhance the tourism entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Lastly, the Agriculture Response Vehicle Scheme provides farmers with financial assistance to procure agriculture response vehicles to transport their produce. This move aims to mitigate the costs spent by farmers on transportation and create a strong transportation network for them. The scheme is expected to boost the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem in the state.
Overall, these schemes are expected to improve transportation efficiency, promote entrepreneurship, and enhance the overall economy of Meghalaya. The introduction of a mobile application and website for tracking and booking the buses will also make the system more accessible and convenient for the public.
